Shalom all,
Arrangements have now been made for our Chanukah party and I just wanted to make sure that everyone "saves the date" of Sunday, December 13th beginning at 4:00 p.m. We have a great new venue, which I think people will enjoy and perhaps want to use for our seder in April as well. It's called the Brookings Event Center (not to be confused with the Activity Center) and the address is 800 Chetco Avenue Unit B. It's a great space with a full kitchen, three bathrooms and a large setup area as well. Check it out on Facebook, where you can find multiple pictures at the bottom of the timeline. There's also plenty of off street parking right off Chetco Avenue. I think you will like this place.
For those of you who missed it, we had a great start to the 5776 season in Brookings last weekend. We now have a Torah in Brookings for the first time and it was read at Friday night services! On Saturday, we started our new class "The Torah - Inconsistencies and Survival" based upon two books - "The Book of J" and "The Jew in the Lotus". There is still time to participate and you won't want to miss it. Rabbi Les provided the following outline for the first five classes based upon the Book of J:
Outline for first five sessions:
I. PREFACE ON NAMES AND TERMS (pp. 3 - 5); INTRODUCTION (pp. 9 -
16); ENFOLDING AN AUTHOR (pp. 17 -23); IMAGINING AN

IV. The Book of J as translated by David Rosenberg
Chapters 56 - 178 (pp. 61 - 172)
Commentaries:
JACOB through IN THE WILDERNESS (pp. 209 -269)
V. Conclusion: THE GREATNESS OF J (pp. 316 - 322)
Next month, we will return to our usual schedule of the second Shabbat of the month and services and classes will alternate between Crescent City and Brookings. So, on November 13th and 14th, Shabbat activities will be held at the Temple in Crescent City (956 "J" Street) and in December, Shabbat will be held in Brookings with services on Friday, December 11th and class on Saturday, December 12th.
And, once again, I'd like to remind folks that Temple activities don't come without a cost and if one values what Temple Beth Shalom has to offer, financial support is necessary. While we never turn people away for lack of funds, we expect and appreciate support at the rate of $150 per person or $300 per couple for the year 5776. If you are fortunate to be able to give more, that generosity is greatly appreciated. And I should add that the earlier you make your contribution of dues, the less financial stress is put upon the Temple and planning for the year is made easier for all concerned. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.
Once again don't forget to "save the date" for the Chanukah party - Sunday, December 13th.
B'shalom,
- Marty
