Yom Kippur, 5776 and beyond

Shalom all,

Erev Yom Kippur services, conducted by Rabbi Les Scharnberg, will be held at the Temple in Crescent City, 956 "J" Street, on Tuesday, September 22nd beginning at 7:00 p.m.  On Wednesday, September 23rd, morning services for Yom Kippur will also be held at the Temple in Crescent City beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Times for Yizkor and Ne'ilah services will be decided at services.  Those wishing to have names read at Yizkor services should send me their list of names with a guide to pronunciation ready for the Rabbi by Monday, September 21st.  Email your list to martygrodin@yahoo.com and I will forward your list to the Rabbi in time for Yizkor.

And as is done in "the big cities", Yom Kippur is the time of year that I usually begin my pitch for support of the Temple.  During these "Days of Awe", it is appropriate for folks to think about the significant benefit that comes to Jews on this little spit of earth where we choose to live, to have a synagogue, a place of worship, a learned and generous Rabbi, a place of community, a place to call home.  I ask you to consider this during these high holy days and to support your Temple to best of your ability.  While we never turn people away for lack of funds, we expect and appreciate support at the rate of $150 per person or $300 per couple for the year 5776.  If you are fortunate to be able to give more, that generosity is greatly appreciated.  And I should add that the earlier you make your contribution of dues, the less financial stress is put upon the Temple and planning for the year is made easier for all concerned.  Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.

Our regular Shabbat services and classes will begin on the second Shabbat of October in Brookings and will alternate between Brookings and Crescent City on the second Shabbat of each month.  We will need to find a topic for our next set of classes so if you have any ideas or special wishes for a class, bring those ideas to high holiday services for discussion by the congregation.

May you be inscribed in the book of life and have an easy fast this Yom Kippur of 5776.

B'shalom,

  - Marty
