Passover

Pesach, or Passover begins this Friday night and goes until next Friday night for Reform Jews and all Jews in Israel. Orthodox and Conservative Jews in America observe eight days, so for those who follow those branches of Judaism, the holiday ends Saturday night next week.

It is traditional to have a seder, a ritual meal, at home the first, or first and second nights. When I was a child, our family had first seder with one set of grandparents, and second night with the other grandparents.

Beth Shalom will hold a community seder, open to everyone in the community, Sunday, April 8, beginning at 4 P.M. Rabbi Les Scharnberg will lead the seder for us. The seder will be at the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Marine Way in Crescent City Harbor. It is potluck. Please bring a dish for a good number of people. We are not allowing pork or shellfish, and you should not bring anything containing non-Passover foods. To be safe, bring fruit or a salad (no croutons or bacon). For more information, contact Vivian at 541-412-7105 or Jill at 707-464-5337.

We will not meet for services again until April 20. Torah study will reume April 21.

Joe and I wish everyone a Happy Passover. We hope to greet you in person this Sunday.

Barry Wendell
President
Beth Shalom
