Shalom to all!
The last days of summer are quickly passing and Rosh Hashanah (5775) is quickly approaching. Jill, Harley, and Donna have done an incredible amount of work to renew and refresh the Temple in Crescent City. We all will be looking forward to see the results of their efforts. What a nice way to begin our fourth decade on the northern California / southern Oregon coast. Thank you so much!
Our first Shabbat service will be held in Brookings at the Curry Coastal Pilot conference room on September 12th at 7:00 p.m. Enter through the red doors off Art Walk Alley. On Saturday, September 13th, we will be holding our first class of the fall season, also in the Pilot's conference room at 10:00 a.m. The title of the class is Jewish Sacred Texts. The book for this class is called "Back To The Sources: Reading The Classic Jewish Texts" and can be purchased on Amazon for $13.83 plus shipping or check on goodreads.com which has a drop down menu for online stores like half.com in order to comparison shop. The cost for the classes will be set at $5.00/class and it is based on the expectation that, at least, 8-10 people sign up for the class and we will charge for the first 5 classes initially (or $25.00) and see how we progress through the book. After the first five classes, we will evaluate how many more classes will be needed to complete the course.
Erev Rosh Hashanah services begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Temple in Crescent City (956 J Street) on Wednesday, September 24th. Morning services for Rosh Hashana will also be at the Temple in Crescent City and begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 25th. Tashlich will follow this service and will be, as usual, at the B Street pier.
Erev Yom Kippur (Kol Nidrei) will also be held at the Temple in Crescent City on Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 4th, Yom Kippur services will begin at 10:00 a.m. - again at the Temple in Crescent City.
After the high holidays, we will continue our monthly Shabbat services and Saturday morning classes beginning with services and the second class of our series. The Rabbi has informed me that he needs to make a change in the schedule for October to the last weekend of the month. I'm not sure if that means the 24th/25th or 31st/1st yet but we'll learn more on September 12th. Services are always at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday classes are at 10:00 a.m. October services and class will be in Brookings in the Pilot conference room. After October, services and classes will alternate between Crescent City and Brookings and will be held on the second "full" Shabbat of the month. Therefore, dates for November are the 14th and 15th and in December, the12th and 13th. You can mark your calendars or check the blog or newspaper for dates.
Also, as an early "reminder", the Temple is never "flush" with cash to compensate the Rabbi so, annual membership "dues" of $300 for couples or $150 for singles are greatly appreciated. We never turn people away for lack of funds but if you are lucky enough to be able to give more, that too is appreciated. The earlier you make your contributions to the Temple, the less we need to worry about having the funds to sustain our programs. The other benefit from early contributions is that you won't need to hear me "carp" about it. Thanks to one and all for your generosity and support.
After two highly successful years of sustained involvement by our community, I look forward to seeing everyone for the start of our fourth decade at Temple Beth Shalom. Shabbat shalom and see you next week!
