Wow! What a great turnout we had for our first Shabbat of the season! It's getting to be a regular expectation that we have a minyon each month for both Shabbat services and our Saturday morning classes. It wasn't very long ago that we had to include the Torah and even the golem as a "stretch" to make a minyon.
Next week, we begin a new year (5775) and with it a renewal of Temple Beth Shalom, both with our newly refurbished physical presence at 956 J street in Crescent City, CA and with our reinvigorated congregation, which has grown in both numbers and engagement at services and at Jewish classes.
Erev Rosh Hashanah services begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Temple in Crescent City (956 J Street) on Wednesday, September 24th. Morning services for Rosh Hashanah will also be at the Temple in Crescent City and begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 25th. Tashlich will follow this service and will be, as usual, at the B Street pier in Crescent City.
Erev Yom Kippur (Kol Nidrei) will also be held at the Temple in Crescent City on Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 4th, Yom Kippur services will begin at 10:00 a.m. - again at the Temple in Crescent City.
Due to a conflict in the Rabbi's schedule, our October schedule for Shabbat has been changed. Shabbat services in October will now be on Friday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Services will be held in Brookings at the Curry Coastal Pilot conference room. Enter through the red doors off Art Walk Alley.
On Saturday, October 25th, we will be holding our second class of the fall season, also in the Pilot's conference room at 10:00 a.m. The title of the class is Jewish Sacred Texts. The book for this class is called "Back To The Sources: Reading The Classic Jewish Texts" and can be purchased on Amazon for $13.83 plus shipping or check on goodreads.com which has a drop down menu for online stores like half.com in order to comparison shop. The cost for the classes is $5.00/class and there will be ten classes making up the course.
After October, services and classes will alternate between Crescent City and Brookings and will be held on the second "full" Shabbat of the month. Therefore, dates for November are the 14th and 15th and in December, the12th and 13th. You can mark your calendars or check the blog or newspaper for dates. Services are always at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday classes are at 10:00 a.m.
Now for the "business" part of this post. Temple Beth Shalom is never "flush" with cash to compensate the Rabbi so, annual membership "dues" of $300 for couples or $150 for singles are expected and greatly appreciated. We never turn people away for lack of funds but if you are lucky enough to be able to give more, that too, is appreciated. The earlier you make your contributions to the Temple, the less we need to worry about having the funds to sustain our programs. The other benefit from early contributions is that you won't need to hear me "carp" about it.
Thanks to one and all for your generosity and support.
Marty Grodin
