We will greet Shabbat again on Friday evening at 7 at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City.
This is Shabbat Hagadol, named for a phrase in the haftarah, the prophetic reading. Torah study continues Saturday afternoon at the temple from 4:30-6:30. The parsha this week is Achare Mot, Leviticus 16:1- 18:30. This section contains rules for sexual behavior. The special haftarah for Shabbat Hagadol is from Malachi, 3:4-24. In the haftarah, God speaks of sending Elijah "before the awesome (hagadol) fearful day of Adonai."
Passover begins at sunset Monday night. This is the night of the first seder. Our community seder is at 5:30 Saturday evening next week, April 23, at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Hall in Crescent City harbor. There is a five dollar per person fee to pay for expenses, and it is potluck. This event is open to the public, including children. The seder, led by Rabbi Les Scharnberg, begins promptly at 6. Please send a note back to us at delnortebethshalom@gmail.com if you wish to attend and have not coordinated with Jill (California) or Vivian (Oregon). They will call you back and help you decide what to bring.
Best wishes at this holiday season from my family to yours.
