Nation Building

We will gather again for Sabbath worship at 7 P.M. Friday night at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City.

Our Friday afternoon Torah study has not worked out as well as expected. For July, we will go back to meeting at 4:30 Saturday, and see how that works. Our parsha this week is Chukat, Numbers 19:1-22:1. This section includes the red heifer laws, the death of Miriam, and a skip over  thirty-eight years until the new band of Hebrews is ready to fight a war to conquer The Promised Land.

Please join us for services and Torah study. Have a safe, happy and patriotic Fourth of July.

The Miracle of Leadership

We will meet at 4:30 Friday at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City, for Torah study. Our parsha this week is Korach, Numbers 16:1-18:32. We read about the rebellion against Moses and Aaron.

At six, we will break for dinner, and come back for services at seven.

Please join us for one or both Friday sessions. We are also looking for service leaders. If you would like to volunteer, post a note on the blog or send an e-mail to delnortebethshalom@gmail.com. We are also at P.O.Box 1557, Crescent City, CA 95531.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far.

This Week at Beth Shalom

We will continue, for now, to combine Torah study with services Friday afternoon and evening. Torah study will be 4:30-6 P.M., we'll break for dinner, then come back for services at 7 P.M. All events are at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City.

The parsha this week is Shelach-Lecha, Numbers 13:1-15:41. This section tells the story of the twelve spies who scouted out the land of Canaan as the Israelites were camped near the border.

We are looking for volunteer service leaders this summer. Rabbi Scharnberg is off until the end of August. If you would like to lead a service, please send an e-mail todelnortebethshalom@gmail.com. Last week, we broke for dinner and ate at Denny's, which has a varied enough menu to accommodate all. The week before, at our Shavuot celebration, we brought in pizza and Jill made a salad from her garden veggies. Let us know if you have another suggestion, or would like to cater a dinner break.

The public school year ends this week. Congratulations to teachers and students alike on finishing the year.

Shavuot and This Weekend

Thanks to Jill Munger for bringing fresh salad from her garden for our Shavuot meal last Friday. Thanks also to Rabbi Joe Hample for treating us to pizza and cheesecake, and for volunteering to lead our service last week.

Shavuot begins tonight at 8:31 according to the Chabad-supplied candle lighting times on our blog page        (http://templebethshalom.blogspot.com if you are reading this from our e-mail list). The holiday extends two days for Orthodox and Conservative Jews outside Israel, and one day for Reform Jews and everyone in Israel, ending at 9:41 P.M.  The holiday commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai, and the early summer harvest in Israel. Traditions include eating dairy products, reading the Book of Ruth, and staying up all night and studying.

We will continue Torah study Friday afternoon, moving the time this week to 4:30 P.M. to 6 followed by a break to 7 for dinner. We may go out as a group or bring in food. Contact me if you would like to bring food  at delnortebethshalom@gmail.com, or leave a comment on the blog. Services will begin at 7 P.M. All events are at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City.

Our parsha this week is Beha'alotecha , Numbers 8:1-12:16. This section includes the revolt of Miriam and Aaron against Moses.

Please join us this Friday for study at 4:30 and services at 7. Enjoy our holiday beginning tonight.

Shavuot!

We are changing our schedule after input from the regulars at services. Beginning this week, we will have both Torah study and services on Friday. Torah study will be from 4-6, and services will be 7-9. In between, we will break for dinner. This eases the burden for those who have a long distance to drive to the temple, but want to attend both services and Torah study.

Shavuot, the holiday that comes on the fiftieth day after the Passover seder, is this coming week. It begins Tuesday night, June 7,  for one day for Reform Jews, and two days for those who follow Conservative and Orthodox traditions. Traditionally, this holiday represents the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

At Beth Shalom, we will celebrate Shavuot this Friday with Torah study at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City, at 4 P.M. We will have pizza and perhaps cheesecake, if our cardiologists allow, during the break from 6-7 P.M., followed by a Shavuot Shabbat service at 7 P.M. Our service will include a Torah service.

The parsha this week is Naso, Numbers 5:1-7:89. This section includes the priestly blessing. We may also discuss the Book of Ruth, which is traditionally read at Shavuot.

Please join us for our festive holiday celebration.
