This week at Beth Shalom of Crescent City and Brookings

We will gather Friday evening at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City, to welcome shabbat. If you would like to lead the service, there is still time to volunteer.

Saturday morning, our weekly Torah study continues from 10 Am to noon at the temple. The parsha is Pinchas, Numbers 25:10 -30:1, where zealotry is rewarded.

A Hebrew class is forming in Brookings, taught by our newcomer organic farmers Morris and Sarah. The first session will be Sunday, July 25 at 11 AM at Barbara's apartment. Please call Vivian at 541-412-7105 for more information, to register and get the address and directions.

We hope to have a newsletter out by mid-July. If you would like to contribute an article, let me know soon, and submit it by July 9.

Have a good week, a peaceful shabbat and a patriotic July 4.

This Week at Beth Shalom

We will gather this Friday at 7 PM at the temple, 956 J St. in Crescent City, to welcome shabbat. I'm not sure yet who will be leading the service.

Saturday morning is torah study at 10 AM at the temple. The group will discuss Parshat Balak, about a talking mule, among other things.

I have received an article for our newsletter for July, and I'm writing one myself. If you have something you would like to write about, e-mail me at doveliezer2001@yahoo.com. I am visiting around northern California this week, but I am available by e-mail.

Also. Hebrew class is forming in Brookings beginning July 18. Stay tuned for updates about time, location and cost.

Happy summer, and may you all have a peaceful shabbat.

The Meeting- This Week

Nine of us met last Sunday at Barbara's apartment in Brookings. Barry Wendell was elected president, Judi Lewis, treasurer, and Barbara Johnston, at-large board member. We are hoping to reinvigorate Temple Beth Shalom. A newsletter with a dues renewal form should be out in a few weeks. We are planning a barbecue/fundraiser for later in the summer. People are organizing a book group. Rabbi Scharnberg will be off this summer, as usual. He will be back in early September for second day Rosh Hashana services. Over the summer, volunteers will lead services.

If you are interested in leading services, hosting an event, or becoming a member, please contact me here, or at delnortebethshalom@gmail.com. We have also renewed our post office box in Crescent City. It is : P.O. Box 1557, Crescent City, CA 95531.

This Friday, Barbara Johnston will be leading the shabbat evening service at 7 P.M. at the temple, 956 J Street in Crescent City. Saturday morning we will discuss Parshat Chukat, Numbers 19:1 to 22:1, at the temple from 10 A.M. to noon.

Congregational Meeting

Shavua Tov (a good new week). This post is from Barry Wendell in Crescent City. David Cooper turned this website over to me.

We will have a congregational meeting next Sunday, June 13 at 11:30 A.M., to hopefully reconstitute the board, elect officers, and talk about the future of Beth Shalom. This will be a pot-luck brunch at a private home in Brookings, OR. Please contact Barbara at 541-813-1141 to RSVP, get the address and sign up to bring food. This is your chance to have a say in the future of the congregation, and to share a meal with your community. If you know someone who is not online, please contact them and tell them about this event.

Beth Shalom Schedule for the Week of May 30th

With H-shem's ever loving kindness, we will meet at the synagogue at 956 J Street in Crescent City this Friday evening at 7:00 pm for Shabbat services. Rabbi Joe Hample of Pelican Bay State Prison has volunteered to lead the services, as always, all friends and congregants are welcome to attend.

We will meet to light candles, hear about some Torah and have a little kiddish as a community before we retire to our respective weekends.

The following Saturday morning at 10:00 am we will meet again at the synagogue in Crescent City for our weekly Torah study. This week we are reading parshat Sh'lach (Numbers 13:1 - 15:41). In this portion we come to a major turning point for the new born nation of Israel generally known as "the sin of the spies." H-shem is preparing to lead us up to the land which he has promised to give to us as the inheritance of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob. So, a scouting party is sent ahead to reconnoiter the land and report back to the people. When the spies return and offer their editorialized version of what they saw the people lose faith in H-shem and doom an entire generation to perish in the wilderness. In fact it is said that this sin is the source much of the suffering in the world even today.

Shavua tov and be well.
