New in Town

Hi, I'm Rabbi Joe Hample, a recent arrival in Crescent City and the new Jewish chaplain at Pelican Bay State Prison. Previously I've interned in a Southern California jail and a Harlem hospital, prayed at nursing homes in Buffalo, taught Russian immigrants in San Francisco. I consider it a privilege to work with underserved populations.

I was born and raised in New York State, moved to California in 1980, and spent many years as a systems analyst at Wells Fargo Bank. In 2004 I flew to Jerusalem to begin rabbinical studies. I was ordained last May by Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles.

My partner Barry Wendell is a Baltimore native, a retired schoolteacher, and a cantorial soloist. Barry and I are having fun exploring the amenities of the Redwood Empire, especially Temple Beth Shalom. We look forward to meeting you soon!

With H-shem's ever loving kindness we will meet at the Synagogue at 956 J Street in Crescent City this Friday evening at 7:00pm for Shabbat services.

We will meet to light candles, welcome the Shabbat Queen and have a little kiddish as a community before we retire to our respective weekends.

The following Saturday morning at 10:00am we will meet at the synagogue in Crescent City for our weekly Torah study. This week we will read and discuss parshat Beshalach (Exodus 13:17 - 17:16) where we will read about the miracles that H-shem performed for us as he took us out of Egypt to receive His Torah at mount Sinai.

With G-d's help, Rabbi Scharnberg is still traveling in Patagonia. Our prayers are with him for a safe and inspiring trip and a safe and speedy return.
